From Data to Dream: AI Art, Shaped by Thought

Issue 4
April 4th 2025

An art collective is a group of individuals who unite around a shared vision to create, produce, and showcase artwork. It provides a platform for collaboration, experimentation, and resource sharing, allowing artists to learn from each other and take creative risks. Art collectives thrive on collaboration, diversity, and flexibility, often bringing together artists with different skills and backgrounds to create innovative works. Being part of a collective offers benefits like collaborative learning, support, and resource sharing. A couple of  art collective examples, followed by an AI Art collective –

teamLab (f. 2001) is an international art collective. Their collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, and the natural world. Through art, the interdisciplinary group of specialists, including artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, and architects, aims to explore the relationship between the self and the world, and new forms of perception.

Paper Rad was an art collective from approx. 2000 until 2008, who were known for creating comics, zines, video art, net art, MIDI files, paintings, installations, and music with a distinct “lo-fi” aesthetic often associated with underground culture or 1990s “retro tech”, juxtaposed images and featuring bright colors.

FRMWRK.AI Community is an AI Art Collective | Global Hub for Creativity started by @9cons.ai and @tuda.ai with admin help from @dullia.ai

Why did you start FRMWRK.AI?

FRMWRK.AI was started to create a genuine community for AI artists, addressing the scattered and surface-level nature of many existing AI art spaces. The goal is to offer a place for serious artists to connect, challenge each other, and grow. The inspiration to support the AI art community comes from the desire to elevate AI art, which is still not widely recognized in some circles. The aim is to provide spaces where artists can push their work beyond just “cool AI images” and create meaningful pieces. AI art’s global reach is a key benefit, as it allows for collaboration across borders, uniting people visually regardless of language. When selecting artists to join the community, the focus is on originality, vision, and the willingness to experiment—followers aren’t as important as having a distinct style and pushing AI in creative ways. The overall vibe and energy of the artist also play a significant role.

AI art collabs bring members of a collective together to interpret a theme and create a piece of art, which is then posted and tagged by selected members. Collabs are a core part of the AI art community, with artists frequently reaching out to each other to team up. Collabs push creativity in ways you can’t achieve alone, says @tuda.ai. When several artists bring their styles together, something unexpected and exciting happens. AI is already a fusion of influences, and collaborations amplify that.

One such collab for FRMWRK was based on the sale of Comedian is a 2019 artwork by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Created in an edition of three, it appears as a fresh banana affixed to a wall with duct tape. The sale of the “Comedian” for $6.2 million left many incredulous, with critics asking how such an object can justify its price. Some argue that the art provokes thought, sparks debate, and encapsulate a moment in art history. AI Art is a perfect way to react to the hype.

Ah yes, *Comedian*—the pinnacle of modern artistic genius. A banana. Taped to a wall. Groundbreaking stuff. The secret to artistic immortality was just a roll of duct tape and a quick trip to the produce aisle? Bravo, Cattelan, bravo. Truly, the art world knows no bounds, especially when it comes to absurdity.

This “masterpiece,” which sold for an absurd sum of money, doesn’t just hang on a wall—it holds up a mirror to society (or so we’re told). Is it about consumerism? The fleeting nature of life? The fragility of our sanity as we watch wealthy collectors bid on literal fruit? Who knows! That’s the beauty of it. It can mean whatever you want it to mean—conveniently translating to, “We’ll slap a price tag on anything as long as it’s pretentious enough.”

Let’s duct-tape the line between “high art” and “hilarious nonsense” and call it a day.@dank_hopper

Meet the Artists

@9cons.ai has a background in advertising which strongly influences his AI art, where compelling visuals and immediate impact are key. He draws creative inspiration from 1960s Japanese graphic design, Pop Art, and is fascinated with patterns and clean design aesthetics, all accentuated by vibrant colors.

@tuda.ai grew up during the transition between analog and digital—old CRT monitors, VHS tapes, and the early internet. That mix of nostalgia and technology shaped how he sees things. He has long been been drawn to retro-futurism, cyberpunk, retro anime, and the raw, hand-drawn energy of ’80s and ’90s anime. AI allows him to blend these influences in a way that feels both familiar and fresh.

@dullia.ai is drawn to surrealistic and biomorphic movements, with strong sci-fi and futuristic influences, and a touch of haute couture. She leans toward soft, pastel tones to reflect the gentleness she tries to carry daily. She works like a xenologue, stepping beyond what is familiar to conjure new life forms and expressions. She is drawn to metamorphosis, merging organic shapes with futuristic influences and nurturing a deep urge to see beyond everyday limits.
