Ian Demsky, aka @kindabloop, is a gifted AI artist who stepped away from his 55.7k followers and stopped posting his creations on Instagram last August. You can read his final post, explaining his reasons for moving on, below.

A newspaper journalist, science writer, and editor, he began exploring AI art in 2022 as a one-month experiment. Three years later he was deep into an ongoing exploration of the medium, drawing on his background with language to create distinctive and unexpected visual results.

Embracing recursion, randomness, and happy accidents, @kindabloop’s process favored the organic and unpredictable. He avoided post-processing to allow the AI to freely “hallucinate”. An artist who trusted the machine human collaboration, while consistently nudging his creations beyond the expected.

This issue of aithena mag centers the statement below of @kindbloop to cease creating ai art, to generate a year end debate on the state of AI art. All the comments were posted under his final post and are published here, unedited. I would love to hear your thoughts and will publish them in a future issue.

i started this project with a question: can this technology create art?

that is, can it give birth to something that hasn’t been seen before, something that provokes thought and/or emotion, something the world is better off with than without?

after generating more than 170,000 images, assembling 3,000 posts, publication in magazines, inclusion in international shows, selling prints, and licensing two book covers, i feel the answer to that question is a qualified yes.

is it theft, yes

should the artists whose work was ingested be compensated, yes

should there be a right to opt out, yes

is the technology itself environmentally unconscionable, yes

are the titans of the technology politically awful, yes

and yet, and yet… there’s some *magic* in it

so, today, after three years, i’m putting this project down

i need to reflect. i hope my fellow creators are reflecting as well

be excellent to each other — you’ve all been so excellent to me
