The End of 2025 AI Art Debate Issue
Issue 14
December 31st, 2025
The final issue of aithena mag for 2025 centers around the August statement by @kindabloop to cease creating ai art. I chose this post in order to generate a year-end debate on the state of AI art. I hope that you will respond to me by emailing aithenaartmag@gmail.com with your thoughts and I will include them in a future issue. I am adding a mailbox page in 2026.
The original post is below. ⬇️
Another goal for the magazine in the new year is to look at AI in small, personal ways, focusing on how it shows up in culture and how it shapes the way we all create AI art. I will be asking these questions of you all going forward. To start us off, I have included a list of my favorite books, published in 2025, that comment on art and culture and the effects of AI in either direct or tangential ways.
Can we talk about Pluribus? The show credits state, “This show was made by humans,” yet Pluribus taps into the AI zeitgeist in a way that Vince Gilligan, the creator of Pluribus, never intended. Rhea Seehorn is brilliant as Carol. It’s by far my fav show of 2025.
i started this project with a question: can this technology create art?
that is, can it give birth to something that hasn’t been seen before, something that provokes thought and/or emotion, something the world is better off with than without?
after generating more than 170,000 images, assembling 3,000 posts, publication in magazines, inclusion in international shows, selling prints, and licensing two book covers, i feel the answer to that question is a qualified yes.
is it theft, yes
should the artists whose work was ingested be compensated, yes
should there be a right to opt out, yes
is the technology itself environmentally unconscionable, yes
are the titans of the technology politically awful, yes
and yet, and yet… there’s some *magic* in it
so, today, after three years, i’m putting this project down
i need to reflect. i hope my fellow creators are reflecting as well
be excellent to each other — you’ve all been so excellent to me
I choose three provocative of the many comments that were posted under his final IG post and featured those three artists in this issue —@oonaode and@gude_ai and @thelightisdarkenough .
These comments are published on their respective feature pages, entirely unedited, along with a selection of their art works. Links on their names or below in the content area.
